TIMELINE FOR MOVING

8 Weeks Before Moving

  • Begin doing research on the community in which you are moving to
  • Search for activities offered, schools nearby, grocery stores, hospitals, etc.
  • Create a budget and a plan for how and when the move will take place
  • Set dates and goals for the move and store all information in one "mover's file” so it does not get lost
 

7 Weeks Before Moving

  • Set a moving date
  • Contact moving companies to get a quote on their prices
  • Start gathering all important records that you want to bring with you
    • Medical, dental, financial, family, pets, birth, insurance, etc.
  • If moving far, make travel plans as well as overnight accommodations if needed
  • Take inventory of all the personal items and decide which ones will come with you to your new home
 

6 Weeks Before Moving

  • Choose a moving company to use
  • Begin the packing process, starting with areas such as the attic, basement, and storage closets throughout the house
    • Separate all belongings into sections: keep, donate, trash
  • Start using up items that will not be able to make the move with you such as, frozen foods
 

5 Weeks Before Moving

  • Evaluate your inventory list and purchase packing supplies accordingly
  • Send out furniture for cleaning or repair
  • Make a list of people who will need to be notifies of your move: friends, family, businesses, etc
 

4 Weeks Before Moving

  • Arrange to have your utility service at your current home turned off the day after your move and have your new home's utility service turned on the day before you move
  • Contact magazine and newspaper subscriptions and set a date for them to end at your current home
  • Arrange for other home services to be discontinued at your current home: water, electricity, internet, television cable, garbage, etc.
  • Plan a garage sale or donate un-needed items to charity
 

3 Weeks Before Moving

  • Return rented items and pick up things such as laundry
  • Change your address with the post office and any in-mail services
  • Find friends or family who are willing to help with the move
  • Start packing common areas such as family rooms, guest rooms, garage, etc.
 

2 Weeks Before Moving

  • Confirm personal travel arrangements
  • Confirm the details of the move with the moving company
  • Plan our meals for the last week of moving to clear out any other food that will not be used
  • Begin packing all other items that are not essential for the last week
  • Discard or recycle all aerosols, paint, oils, and other flammable/toxic chemicals
 

1 Week Before Moving- Final Things To Do

  • Notify everyone on your pre-made list of your new address, phone number, and other contact information
  • Complete packing
  • Defrost refrigerator/freezer and secure appliances for moving
  • Arrange items in order of how the movers will take them to your new home
  • Arrange for child care or pet care on moving day
  • Store all receipts and paperwork in your "mover's file"
  • Cancel Home Owner's Insurance for after the move
  • Cleaning:
    • Carpets vacuumed, floors swept
    • Ovens and stovetops cleaned
    • Refrigerator cleaned and aired out (at least 24 hours prior to moving)
    • Cabinets, showers, and counters wiped down
    • Garage floor swept
    • All trash removed
